The work of Joaquín Salas aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals related to the Elimination of Poverty (1) and Hunger (2), as well as climate action (13).
Joaquín Salas holds a degree in Computer Systems Engineering from ITESM (1989), a master's in Electrical Engineering from Cinvestav (1991), and a PhD in Computer Science from ITESM (1996). From 2010 to 2011, he was a Fulbright fellow at Duke University, and he has completed sabbatical stays at MIT (2022-2023), UAQ (2014-2015), and the Computer Vision Center in Spain (2005-2006). He has also been a visiting professor at Xerox PARC (2002), Oregon State University (2001), and the Computer Vision Center (2000). Between 1993 and 1996, he was a visiting scholar at Stanford University and from 1990 to 1991 at the National School of Telecommunications in Brest (France).
He was the Director of CICATA Querétaro of IPN, a position for which he received the Lázaro Cárdenas del Río medal, the highest honor awarded by IPN, from the President of Mexico. He is a member of SNII, holding a Level III position (2025-2029). His research interests include computer vision and pattern recognition. He has written more than 60 articles in international journals and specialized conferences. He has acted as a reviewer for major conferences and journals in the area and co-organized the Mexican Conference on Pattern Recognition. He has been an invited editor at the journal Pattern Recognition (Elsevier) and co-editor in volumes of the Lecture Notes in Computer Science series by Springer. He has been the principal investigator in national research projects supported by CONACYT, as well as international projects funded by CONACYT, MIT, and the University of California. Joaquín Salas did fundamental work, along with other stakeholders, in what would eventually become CONACYT's Graduate Programs with Industry. He also founded the Laboratory of Light Autonomous Systems, the first Fab Lab of IPN.
